The thing I like about alt tunings is they are very effective in getting you past creative blocks that occur from playing the same old chords and licks for too long. Great for writing tunes.

I have a Roland Ready Strat and a GR 33-you can set up a patch that you can make each string what ever note you want. true it has some short commings- find a store that has one and give it a try.

I have a '72 Fender Jazz 4-string that I keep tuned BEAD and I use it for all of the drop-tuned songs that my band plays. Not crazy about having to carry an extra guitar but carrying gear is just part of the job description. lol.

In regards to the 'half step down' on bass Roger - the reason I used to do it was to make it easier to play all the key of Eb and Bb stuff that the vocalist for that particular band wanted to do. Besides, that Eb played an octave up just wasn't right.

Saw Etta James at the House of Blues in Boston Friday night. Unless I'm mistaken, the bass was tuned down a half step. (Oh, by the way, very tight band, Etta still has great pipes and the show was GREAT!)
