ok low E string rattles heavy all the way up n down the neck, just took it out of the case 1st time in a wile when it went in i loosened all the strings out of tune knowing it would b in there a wile its a fenix XL-30 jumbo i use d'dario light strings it is now tuned and sounds like crap because of the buzzing no other string buzzes just the low E what did i do wrong?

I think if you put extra light acoustic strings (.010) on the guitar and it rattles, you're in desperate need of maintenance, period. Get thee to a luthier for the proper assessment. there are too many variables at work here and this blog could give you a lot of things to consider, but the bottom line is, have a professional eyeball the situation, especially if you're not that handy.

worn frets and a worn nut are both possible, although if it was the nut I'd think the buzz would be at the 1st fret. Your on the right track now, a luthier is definately the way to go if your uncomfortable doing it yourself.

Thanks for the good comments guys. At this point I think a Luthier is in order. Can't raise the bridge easily and truss rod isn't working. Are there any other possibilities? Like for example, worn frets, acoustic bridge adustment (or regluing)? I did take off the saddle once just to see if I could do it. I was feeling adventurous. Hope I got that back in place right.

Put a capo on the 1st fret, then depress a string (low E) at the fret where the neck joins the body. Can you slip a credit card between the string and the 8th fret bar? If no, then your neck needs relief, loosen the truss rod. If yes, then it's probably fine. If more than 1 credit card fits then tighten the rod til only 1 will fit. If fret still buzzes then raise the bridge til it stops.

You need to go back to 13's... at least!
Based on your description, I don't think the problem, at this stage, is the truss rod. Hard to say without seeing it.
I would recommend you take it to a luthier for an assessment.
For now, heavier strings should do the trick.

Ron,

I may have had some 13's on it, and now have 12's. But I've used various gauges over the past 30 years.
Ron D Comment by Ron D on April 8, 2009 at 9:25pm
Did you recently change string guages?
singin4free Comment by singin4free on April 8, 2009 at 9:20pm
I have an old Guild acoustic (D44M '77) that seems to buzz around the fourth fret. I decided after over 30 years, I'd try to adjust the truss rod. I had never done this before. When I remove the cover for the truss, I discovered that it was all the way loose already. This made me think it needed to be turned the other way, but when I did this the buzz got worse. Since I can't loosen it any more, I left it the way it was (all the way loose), and put some heavy yarn in the nut under the G and D strings to raise them a bit. That works as a quick fix, but what's wrong with the truss rod?
