thing is he gets labelled as pop. i think his blues playing is great and has steadily got better. difficult question tho eh? is why i had to mention a few more. What you think of John Frusciante?
yeah, the guy's a monster guitar player. and no matter what he gets labeled, i just can't get into his music. but no doubts about his playing. he's sick.
Can certainly appreciate your point a lot of guitarists i feel the same about eg steve Vai. Awesome player just not my sorta thing. i just meant that cos he's labelled pop some people don't give him a chance. just wanted to also bring in a few players that noone else seems to be mentioning.
i hear you, man. probably the same with frusciante. since rchp weren't ever really labeled as rock giants, i don't think john got the attention he deserved. he's extremely underrated. the guy can tear it up with the best of them. i like his playing style, but can't really get into his band. haha. same thing with pearl jam! mike mcreedy is so underrated, it's not even funny. but he's just incredible. and yeah, as big a vai fan as i am, he's definitely got stuff i can't listen to.
With regards to john frusciante maybe you should check out ataxia his band with joe lally and josh klinghoffer. he's got some excellent solo albums as well. Agree with you on mike mccready as well, pearl jam are one of my favourite bands and if anyone mentions their guitar playing its always stone or eddie. Wouldn't be pearl jam without him. Jeff martin i also think is fantastic, former frontman and guitarist for the tea party. another who is just riduculously underrated.

Joe Satriani
Buckethead
John 5
Dave Mustain
Jerry Reed
Chet atkins
Zakk Wylde
Albert Collins
Randy Rhoads
tony iommi is still isanely gifted master (sik solos in TRASHED , TURN UP THE NIGHT , SNOWBLIND made me realize you could actually solo on the lower strings) man he's so tasteful also , listen to the end of HEAVEN AND HELL... SO I'D PUT AS A TOP FIVE , FOR THE GUYS WHO MADE ME WANNA PLAY...
IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER + 5 IS TOO SHORT A LIST CUZZA ALL THE VERY MANY STYLINGS THAT EXIST AMONG MY FAVORITE PLAYERS...
VAN HALEN (1st album - 1984)
HENDRIX
STEVIE RAY VAUGHN
MICHEAL SCHENKER (sooo soooooo fkng awesome , original tone and briiliant chops as well as vibrato and he can truely play the blues which is a very important asset in my book... the guy is so underated and overlooked by everyone among the newer skool of sc o calld shedders who , in my opinion kinda blow , id rather not mention names)
TONY IOMMI (we've already disscused this man of genius)
