If u joined this group, it probably means that ur not that good yet. soo just out of curiosity, How long have u been playing guitar? and what guitar do u have?
I've been playing for way too many years to suck as bad as I feel I do. I have CD's, books, DVD's, and online. Have even gone to a class or two. I can play the notes and chords but I struggle with knowing which strumming pattern to use at which part. And please don't say I have to feel it. I'm considering getting private instruction but don't want to put the money into it. Anybody have any suggestions? I have a Washburn Acoustic-Electric.
No. I don't really know other people who play. And I don't know where to find people who have open jams. I did, however, learn of a few places where they do open jams for fingerpicking but I don't remember where. Why do you ask? Is this a good place to learn some stuff? Isn't there something about a sacred guitar group where no one wants to show you anything?
playing with other people is always a good way to learn, they can teach you new techniques and stretch you further and further with each chord change, new strumming pattern or finger picking pattern
This lesson I did up should help you. http://www.myguitarspace.com/video/beginning-strumming-lesson
This is for people to work on their strumming while holding one chord. There are 6 strumming patterns here. If you like it, I also have worksheets with audio and video that go into more detail, just send me a message and I will give you the link.
I've been playing guitar since the 80s and I STILL consider myself a NooB! I think that even the fresh faces of TEENAGERS can teach me something new to learn how to handle my sound a bit better. I don't SUCK, but I don't make a ton of money at it either... I just have FUN with it! To "golfingrob"-- you STILL don't "get it" my friend: MUSIC is another LANGUAGE and you can't simply learn it overnight... you have to TOTALLY IMMERSE yourself into the language and learn how to speak little thoughts before you can recite Shakespeare like Patrick Stewart. And the equipment doesn't really matter... it's something from WITHIN! What is it that YOU want to SAY that you can't say with WORDS? Because MUSIC is the only way to convey that thought/emotion/feeling... if you don't "feel" it, it ain't gonna be there... no matter how much money you throw at it. Also--Stop trying to say things that other people have already said and say your own thing... the only reason you SUCK is because you're comparing yourself to the original... get rid of the cds and get a jammin partner! Do you live in Florida?

I always tell beginners to remember that nearly everything they have ever heard on the radio or a CD started out as a solo arrangement for guitar or piano. it is so important to find your own voice rather than try to imitate someone else's. Sure imitating another's technique is a useful learning tool but learning to incorporate others technique into YOUR style is the real key. Sing a song because you like it. Find a rhythm and tempo that work for you and go at it.
Finding your own voice was a difficult concept for a time... until I found a metaphor! Now, bear with me, EVERYONE says "I LOVE YOU" at one point or another in their lives. But how many people have SAID it and you just didn't BELIEVE it? Saying something on a guitar is EXACTLY like this... some people just don't know how to say it and flow, so they stutter or stammer and SO WHAT?! It's the AUDIENCE that you're going for! If you stutter and they know that your heart is in it, they don't care about the stutters... they don't even HEAR them... all they hear is that you LOVE them... and sometimes, especially when you're new, that's all you really need!
