Franky , that was a novel of a wall post....If you've got it flaunt it I guess .I agree with you man..for me , I will put my playing out there for the benefits of learners and to share my own art with friends and the interested ...I wont compete but I will watch , I entered guitar idol just to get myspace guitar friends and knew I would never stand up to real good players but I saw awsome guitarists with hardly no votes and ok guitarists with far more than they deserved ..promotion was the factor not the actuall playing, I got 12 votes lol .....I guess competition for me takes the fun out of being a musician ...thats just my opinoin ....I used to breakdance in the 80's and competitions were our life ...battles with individuals and gangs of dancers was fun ,but I lost friends and one thing was, I couldnt stand the proud arrogent guys who knew they were good and dissed the guys comming up makin them feel rubbish ......I now speak for the up and struggling guitarists, your music is valid, your guitar journey long and full of battles but not with other guitarists ...just your self .

so yes music is personal, guitar playing is a creative and joined to our self worth and tied up with our feelings ...we play from our hearts sometimes , there will be competitions as will there be who's got he biggest weener in the showers at school, if you want to join the rat race go for it ..not me thank God

mark you bring up an interesting point about competition in music but it goes way way back to robert johnson and before that i spose it was vivaldi .
there just happens to exist in music (all aspects , including songwriting) lennon once slagged a mcartney tune and vice versa so mark , i do agree that it's kinda foolish to compete in an artform but look at moveies , academy awards , wtf , she acted better than her , it sounds stupid but in life whever there lies skill therein lies the question of what can be done to make it new and improved , then you add in personal taste and you hear things like "well , i'd much rather hear david gilmore play the solo in "comfortably numb way more than yngwie's far beyond the sun" so given all these varibles you must come to the conclusion that 1.) it's always gonna be there and 2.) non artists n non musicians love it , it's not unlike boxing matches . ppl love a contest of will... so in that sense
i don't totally mind it... look we've all got our favorite players and actors and athletes all these things take talent... now , do i think Stevie Ray Vaughn elaborated on Jimi Hendrixes talent , yes but he also clearly invented his own unique take on it , so whose the better guitar player , well if you asked me i'll say Hendrix all week and twice on sunday because of the fact that before James Marshall Hendrix , there were no guitar magazines , no new ways of learning this style or that style save for classes one could take which at that time were extremely roooted in a strict regimen of classical piano lessons etc etc , nowthen do i think Stevie could play better than Hendrix , YES I DO , he has got much stronger technical prowess which hendrix was just beginning to expand even further still , also Stevie has every bit as much feel and passion as hendrix , so what gives?????? it's nothing more than time and evolution my friends... i love both players and i mean love is not even strong enough of a word guys , it doesn't come close... i love the competion of guitar cuz 1.) it's hilarious how the shredders think an arpeggio followed by a finger tapped descending run outweighs YNGWIE MALMSTEENS pristine technical abilities to be so naturally gifted w/ his that he can pick up a guitar anywhere at anytime and NOT do warm ups for 45 minutes and simply burn the frets off , i love YNGWIE , Dimeola also kills w/ speed and prescision that , to me it makes the guys who play like nuno and vai seem kinda weaker... but i guess im a bit more old school cuz i love the guys who invent styles like RANDY RHOADS , EDDIE VAN HALEN , DiMEOLA , HENDRIX of course , SRV , but i also dig MICHEAL SCHENKER his passion and feel goes light yrs beyond greghowe and mike varneys shrapnel shredders... i'll always take style over substance...
to me VAN HALEN invented the ultimate competition cuz after he came along in 78 nobody at all knew what the fk to do... next was vai , yngwie , and satch (phhhhhhh chicken nippl) whateer w/ chicken foot man... anyway dudes competiotion is here forever but techincal prowess doesn't always beat the style and versatility of the other man !!! i love the guitar , i play it well , very well.. i kow how good i am but if the right contest arrived id enter,,, guitarwarfare takes the fun out right in the title... makes it sound like some silly 16 yr olds w/ ibanez 360's galore , why ? cuz vai n satch play em...

im out nuff said
well the simple fact is that FIRSTLY HENDRIX PUT THE ELECTRIC GUITAR ON THE MAP , PERIOD AND WHAT A GREAT MAP HE LEFT FOR ALL OF US , so had there been no Jimi NOT ONLY IS THERE NO sTEVIE

I dont agree with competition in music or guitar skills - guess Im just a musician rather than sports guitarist- what do you think
Franky M. Comment by Franky M. on June 27, 2009 at 4:27pm
do you mean modally and diatonicly , that kinda chart

for example the key of G major would climb diatonically thru the nodes going G IONIAN , A DORIAN , B PHRYGIAN , C LYDIAN , D MIXOLYDIAN , E AEOLIAN , F# LOCRIAN... is that wat you mean ???
cuz theres a few different arpeggio charts that do climb (AS I SAID) diatonically...
