... and now for my 2cents worth...
Andres Segovia (the keeper of the flame - our patriarch)
Paco deLuca
John MacLaughlin
Jeff Beck
James Burton
Jimi Hendrix
Stephen Stills
Doc Watson
Merle Travis
Albert King

*always just wanted to get next to Ana Vidovic

* I was visting Danny Gatton (1978 - w/a couple of friends - one of whom was "The Fat Boys" drummer and I witnessed Danny winding his own pickups with a kitchen mixer - this astounded me at the time, but it made perfect sense in retrospect)

@FrankyM: EXCELLENT BUCHANAN NOTES!! Very eloquent and educational. Had no idea about the tone knob stuff. MUCHAS GRACIAS, JEFE!!

LOL!! And good reasons, too. It's a great and wonderful world filled with amazing guitars and players, and everyone should get to be part of it, IMHO. Jeff is very important to me, personally, so I never hesitate to POMP HIM OP :)

Jeff's obviously a legend and extremely talented. I just wanted to deliberately squeeze in some of the "undervalued" younger talent like Bellamy and White. (I should've maybe put top ten "favorites" - heh heh)

How anybody can have a top 10 without Jeff Beck always shocks me (not that your list isn't awesome --- it is --- but still :).

Roy Buchanan is (or , sadly - was) a brilliant guitar player , what he did w/ a telecaster was amazing , it inspired jeff beck and beck inspired him as well... but Roy Buchanan was able to manipulate his tone knobs in the middle of very well disguised ghost bends and often times what sounded like a regular fretted note was him actually in the midst of a silent bent note that would soar down from the heavens of high intervals hitting targets and scarcely if ever missing the one he aimed for... he also would hit really high pinched harmonics (mind you) on a very clean setting , while manipulating tone swells that seemed to emulate wha wha effect and his volume swells in mid bend would make growm men cry... all at once he could bend up to an extremely wide interval as a silent ghost bend then raise the volume knob making the release sound like he was using a whammy bar... another extremely insane and not of this earth brilliant guitar player was a man they appropriately called "The Humbler" CUZ OF HIS TERRIFYING CHOPS FEEL , VIBRATO , SPEED , TONE , HEART , SOUL ---- HE HAD IT ALL AND HIS NAME WAS Danny Gatton (another sad loss to a suicide)... he was the kind of player that Steve Vai would have nightmares about... Gatton was so good at rockabilly , jazz , blues , rock -n- roll , fusion woulda been next had he lived and he was a virtual master in all fields mentioned... think of that for a second (All Fields)... most guitarists that do go outside of their safe haven genre can usually excell in two mayyybe three forms of guitar playing but they'd usually have one very strong suit as opposed to the other , not Gatton , he was a jack of all trades and a master of all trades --- a brilliant , unbelievable guitarist...

You also can't rule out some classical guitarists.

John Williams is a complete beast. His work with Sky was/is awesome.

Jazz fusion guitarist are in a class all to their own. Al DiMeola is one of the best I've ever heard. He blows me away!!! Good call Bane!
