Interesting......I'm giving the old thumb pick another shot. I'm getting better playing fingerstyle with my bare thumb, but the tone is a bit bass heavy and muted.

OK, I'm outnumbered on this. Thus, I can only conclude that I am all wrong. Thank you. And good night.

See, you do know theory! " I probably know more Theory than I think I know." RIGHT Darrell! And if people are talking and you aren't understanding them, well, maybe they aren't very good communicators. As you know, when you read tab, "All they reall…

Tab, whether you know it or not is music theory. Understanding the difference between an A chord and an A minor chord is music theory. Music theory is the field of study that deals with how music works. It examines the language and notation of music…

You reach a point where you have to know a bit of it to progress beyond the cowboy chords. Learning it actually saves some time in the long-run. Theory is not IMHO for people who simply want to talk about music. In order to sit down and read standar…

I strung it up last night, Ed. Conceptually, I like it. But I am wondering if it just won't work for my style of playing. In fingerstyle, my thumb works the bass line. Suddenly there is no bass line any longer. After 15 or 20 minutes, I started stru…

High-Strung [NASHVILLE] Tuning

I've got 3 Larrivee parlor guitars. OK, more than I need I hear you saying, but I had one up for sale and it didn't sell and one of them is over @ Sally's house so I have something to play over there on weekends.
I want to string one of them up for Nashville tuning.
Haven't done this before. Any "issues" (as we are fond of saying in Ann Arbor) that I should be aware of with respect to the nut slots on the 4,5 & 6th strings?
Also, I was thinking that the easiest way to go about this was just… Continue

Theme from MASH (AKA as Suicide is Painless)

Rehearsing now for this afternoon's weekly gig at the U of M Hospital.
Pity the poor staff that has to listen to me and my meager repertoire each week. I try to add new tunes as often as I can, but I fear that it's not often enough.
Debuting three new tunes today. When You Wish Upon a Star, Girl From Ipanema & the theme from MASH; AKA as Suicide is Painless. Is this inappropriate to play in a hospital setting? I don't know. I play it as an instrumental (as are all the tunes I p… Continue

Jorma Kaukonen & David Bromberg

Jorma Kaukonen & David Bromberg are coming to The Ark in Ann Arbor on Monday. I actually have tickets for this show so I can sit and enjoy this one. (I'm not working this show.)

What have you been listening to lately?

I play fingerstyle and don't sing so most of what I listen to falls into that category.
Spending a fair amount of time as I do on various guitar-related forums I am subjected to any number of recommendations. Often I will give them a listen just to see what else is out there.
Such was the case a few times recently and I have been pleased with what I have turned up.
